Chlorination decision looms this week

Back to school for grandparents YOUNG AND OLD: Rosa Turner says goodbye to her Nan, Gail Turner, after celebrating grandparents day at St Margaret’s College last week. More than 70 grandparents came to school for the morning on Wednesday to see their grandchildren learn. The day has been running for 13 years and is a highlight for both pupils and grandparents. •More photos page 9

„„ By Andrew King CHLORINATING drinking water is being considered by the city council because some northwest bores are at risk of being contaminated. The city council will consider on Thursday whether it should temporarily chlorinate bores at Farrington, Grampian and Avonhead. Chlorination is being considered because the north-west catchment bores have a low D grading, while the rest of the city has a higher B grade. The city council report has recommended that temporary chlorination goes ahead until deeper wells are commissioned in 2017. Due to the shallowness of the bores, they are considered the most susceptible to microbiological contaminants. The areas “specifically affected will be notified, particularly “vulnerable parties such as dialysis patients.

“A vote for me is a vote for a candidate who lives in the ward. Local solutions to local problems.

Aaron Keown

Councillor for Harewood Authorised by P. Gatonyi, 228 Milton St.

The report said that the recent water contamination incident in Havelock North has raised concerns about water and public health risks. There are 22 bores in the north-west catchment supplying about 80,000 people, with the shallowest of these at 16m. A programme is already in place to replace the shallow wells with deeper ones, but currently it is not scheduled to be completed until the end of June 2018. Other options for city councillors to consider are: Upgrade the other wells quicker without chlorination; continue the project’s original timeline and include chlorination; or do nothing. Bores at Burnside and Harewood could have standby units for chlorination. Bryan Jenkins, professor for strategic waterway management at the Waterway Centre, said the water will be safe to drink if chlorinated, but with a change in taste and smell.

ELECTION PAPERS should be in the mail and we are ramping up our election coverage on pages 6,7 and 8. The Harewood Ward is the one to watch, with candidates really starting to fight for their place. The frontrunners are likely to be current community board member Faimeh Burke and former city councillor Aaron Keown. The two Rod Camerons, both from Cashmere, could end up splitting the vote meaning good news for Ms Burke and Mr Keown and businessman Brian Gargiulo, who is also running. In the Waimairi Ward, Anthony Rimmell is trying to oust current city councillor Raf Manji. Neither live in the area. Mr Manji has opted for a city-wide outlook at the red zone and the central city rebuild instead of at issues in the area, while Mr Rimmell looks at empowering communities, waterways and housing. –Shelley Robinson

Swimmer ready for transplant games By Georgia O’Connor-Harding BEN STANBURY, 11, was once told he had a one-in-three chance of dying. Now, after receiving a liver transplant last year, the young swimmer will be the only child organ recipient from New Zealand to be compete at the Australian Transplant Games held in Sydney. Ben, of St Albans, will travel to Sydney this week to compete in swimming, shot-put, a 50m sprint and 10-pin bowling. At four months old, Ben was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease after he was rushed to hospital with heart failure. The disease is a genetic disorder where abnormal cysts grow in the kidneys. He also had severe problems with his liver. The night of his diagnosis was a moment his mother Traci Stanbury would never forget after she was told he had a one-in-three chance in dying. “In the end they paralysed him, put him on an ambulance and he spent the next month living up in Starship Hospital,” she said. Mrs Stanbury said since the “traumatic” night, Ben’s heart

We need City Councillors who put you, the community’s interest and our city’s future at the heart of their decision making. My priorities include: • Making streets and intersections safer for everybody especially school pupils, cyclists, the elderly and people with disabilities; • Protecting the purity of our water supply; • Restoring and protecting our streams and waterways; • Rebuilding our community facilities; • Revamping the Bishopdale Mall in collaboration with the community and local business; • Efficient and cost-effective public transport; • Enhancing parks and green spaces; • Protecting our strategic assets; • Affordable rates.

It was an experience he described as “confusing” but because he recovered so quickly from the operation he was out of hospital in about five weeks

and back into swimming a few months later. Over the next few years Ben will be looking to have a kidney transplant with his kidney function currently at 40 per cent. Mrs Stanbury said he will be put on a waiting list of about 600 people when it gets to 30 per cent. But for now, Ben is looking forward to going over to competing in the games as well as visiting Featherdale Wildlife Park. “For him to be the exact same as everyone else in the room and to be completely normal, that is quite a cool thing for him to do,” Mrs Stanbury said. Inspired by paralympian Sophie Pascoe, who won five medals at the Rio Paralympics, Ben will be competing in numerous events including his favourite sport of swimming. Ben first became interested in swimming at age four and leading up to the games he has been practising once a week in preparation. “Never give up because it can always be done,” he said. “Ben is very proud of the fact he is going. He is a very laid-back kid by nature just because of everything he has been through,” Mrs Stanbury said.

L J Dell, Bishopdale I do hope that any council decision to attempt to restore the (Waimairi) or Wai-iti streams is based on hydrology and biology and not on the political need to appease neighbouring voters. Christchurch water should be treasured and not tinkered with. If that means doing nothing for the greater long-term good of the waterways, then the council should close its collective ears to the wails, bite the bullet and do nothing. Let nature take its course. If these streams can magically be reinstated without robbing other sources, then well and good, but to a layperson this occurrence seems to be something we must sadly live with and robbing Peter to pay Paul will just degrade other areas. Decisions such as this should be based on sound science and not politics or finances. Anthony Rimell, Central I’m deeply disappointed in Jamie Gough’s opinion piece in the Nor’West News, September 13. Some facts will show this. In the

2013 local body elections, the Fendalton-Waimairi Ward, an area that included Harewood, elected two councillors from a field of eight candidates. This year, the same area in fact has the same number of candidates running – eight. And that same area will now have three councillors representing its issues on the city council, not just two. I’m also disappointed that Mr Gough has dismissed the importance of local accountability of councillors to a specific constituency. Of course councillors must consider the needs of the entire city. But for too long some councillors have put the needs of the very people who elected them a distant second. The new system requires councillors now to ensure they are representing both the city and their local community. That’s putting the ‘local’ back in local body politics. In my view, one of the reasons some councillors have been re-elected unopposed is because their local communities are extremely satisfied with their representation. Rather than undermining the new system, that actually endorses one of the new system’s core principles of greater local accountability. Clearly, Mr Gough and the others are seen by their communities to be doing a good job. That’s something to be applauded, not dismissed.

classified as slightly higher risk of pollution and some of our springs and streams are running dry, but none of these things should be cause for panic. We should drill some deeper wells quickly, as the council intends and we should study the aquifers and drains together with Environment Canterbury to understand what is happening with ground water. This is normal good infrastructure management, which will allow the best planning, ensure we enjoy our pure water and minimise our costs. All along, we must keep everyone informed so that concerns are minimised. These are the approaches I will always follow if I am elected for Harewood. Sound infrastructure management, control of finances and community engagement.

Safety risk sparks playground upgrade By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A PLAYGROUND at Abberley Park, St Albans, will get a makeover after concerns the current equipment is not up to scratch. The deteriorating equipment will be transformed into a fullscale playground. It will consist of new swings, a carousal, rocking horse, maypole, talk tubes and a see-saw, with astroturf as the surface. The playground renewal landscape plan was approved by the Shirley-Papanui Community Board last Wednesday. Located on Abberley Crescent, the current playground on the east side of the park includes a swing, slide, ramp and see-saw. Following investigations, the city council found the existing play equipment did not meet the Playground Standards. Safety issues found included the swings rusting around the leg support, while both slide chutes were too shallow, which could lead to a child falling off the slide. But St Albans residents were concerned by the amount of green space the park would lose as a result of the playground expansion. The existing green space by

the playground is about 1473m2, with the new playground expected to reduce it to about 1349m2. St Albans Residents’ Association co-chair Emma Twaddell said the city council’s consultation process caused confusion with the residents. “There were different plans put out that didn’t have the same information put on them,” she said. She said the main issue was the extension of the playground being at the expense of other park users. From the 1300 leaflets delivered, the city council received 98 submissions with 20 opposing the proposal and 11 not stating their preference. To address resident’s concerns, the city council’s capital delivery

NOT ARSON A fire that caused millions of dollars in damage to a building in Burnside on Friday is not suspicious, according to a fire investigator. The building, owned by Tait Communications, suffered major damage after a light blew out, causing a fire while cleaners were at the site. Several appliances and 42 firefighters fought the blaze and managed to save vital equipment.

community manager Darren Moses said the layout of the playground was changed by moving equipment further west in the park. This created a more linear playground along the south boundary leaving a larger lawn area than what was in the original plan. Shirley-Papanui Community Board chairman Mike Davidson said while they could not please everyone, a decision needed to be made. “It has to be renewed...unfortunately you can’t just leave them 3 happens, beand hope nothing

cause if something does happen then someone is obviously going to be held accountable,” he said. Construction for the playground is expected to begin in March and be completed by May. Mr Moses said the cost of the playground could not be estimated until the tender process was finished and it was commercially sensitive.

Solutions to gridlock

What should be done about the traffic congestion in the Papanui Ward, particularly along roads like Main North Rd, Cranford St and Papanui Rd? Is rail an option that should be pursued? John Stringer: Papanui Ward city council and community board candidate Explore HOV (high occupancy vehicle) use, or T2 as they call it in Auckland, of the bus lane on Papanui Rd. Use the largely unused lane at peak traffic times to help clear northbound bumper-to-bumper traffic out on to Main North Rd.

Elections

16

Mike Davidson: Papanui Ward city council candidate The Christchurch Northern Corridor project will begin shortly and, when completed, will reduce congestion on Main North and Papanui Rds. As Chairperson of the Shirley-Papanui Community Board, I have been actively involved in addressing the impact this will have on Cranford St, surrounding streets and communities. Dedicated and continuous bus lanes and safe cycleways reduce congestion by encouraging people to use different transport options. When elected, I will continue the work I have already started around this issue, including the downstream effects of the Cranford St four-laning. I will also advocate for rail to be investigated as a long-term solution to congestion.

Simon Britten: Papanui Ward community board candidate Reduction of traffic congestion has been a priority for the current Shirley-Papanui Community Board and, if elected, I will support continued work in this area. We can expect construction of the Northern Corridor to begin soon – this project will have a massive impact on traffic flows, and the new Papanui-Innes Community Board will need to continue to work with affected residents. Rail as a commuter option was assessed unfavourably in 2014, but alternative public transport options, such as light rail, need to be considered, as well as the board supporting ongoing work on cycleways and fine-tuning of the bus network.

Emma Norrish: Papanui Ward community board candidate The completion of the Northern Arterial and the Northern Arterial Extension will make a big difference to traffic patterns in the Papanui Ward. However, this is nearly four years away. Right now we need to incentivise other alternatives such as public transport, cycling and carpooling. I will lobby for bus lanes to be opened up to vehicles with more than one occupant to encourage carpooling. I also want to increase the publicity and education around the safe and direct cycleways currently being planned and constructed, and to be involved in ensuring these are designed and utilised to their full potential.

BACKED UP: Gridlocked roads in the Papanui Ward are cause for concern for hopeful candidates. Congestion is a concern along main roads in Papanui such as Main North Rd, Cranford St and Papanui Rd.

Tuesday September 20 2016

With the October 8 deadline looming for the local body elections, the Nor’West News asked candidates to send in why they should get your vote. The area is covered by four wards - Innes, Papanui, Fendalton and Central. A city councillor is elected from each, except from Fendalton where city councillor Jamie Gough stands unopposed. Two are selected from each ward to be on the community board, apart from Innes where Ali Jones and Jo Byrne stood unopposed. Pauline Cotter: Innes Ward - city councillor Our council succeeded in restoring relationships with the Crown, Ngai Tahu, Environment Canterbury ,Canterbury District Health Board, and is working collaboratively with our communities, adopting an enabling attitude. The long awaited decision allowing the Edgeware Pool Group to rebuild their community pool is but one example. The People’s Choice have successfully retained our assets, while still progressing the rebuild, keeping rates increases low. I look for opportunities to enhance our water quality within our land drainage recovery programme, am passionate about safe guarding of our pure water. Allocations must be monitored, enforcements applied, consents more realistic. I offer representation with compassion, logic, financial prudence.

John Stringer: Papanui Ward city councillor and Papanui-Innes Community Board Christchurch City Ambassador John Stringer is the only candidate who lives in the ward. He grew up (and raised his family) in Papanui; is married to Laurie; attends St Pauls Anglican and Northcity churches; attended Elmwood, Heaton and Chch Boys High schools and sent his kids to Paparoa St, Heaton, St Bedes and Burnside High schools. He has an MA from Victoria University and worked in Parliament for many years. Anthony Rimmell: Waimairi Ward city councillor I am passionate about empowering local communities to make decisions for their future. As a Baptist pastor, I want to see our city council work together for the interests of all the people of Christchurch. I believe our city’s future financial and social security is best protected by keeping our key income-generating assets in council ownership, and by ensuring quality, affordable housing is available for all. Together, we can protect and enhance our waterways and parks. If elected I’ll advocate passionately for the needs of residents in Waimairi.

Brian Gargiulo: Harewood Ward - city councillor I have lived in the Harewood area for 60 years, owning and operating a commercial property growing tomatoes and raspberries. This operation employed up to 50 people of many different ethnicities. I am currently a company director of produce companies in NZ and overseas. People are important to me. I want to create an environment in Harewood and greater Christchurch that is conducive to a desirable quality of life in all aspects of work, travel and recreation. ‘Army’ to the rescue By Gabrielle Stuart THE PLIGHT of children rescued from their homes by Child, Youth and Family, sometimes with nothing but the clothes on their back, has mobilised an army. “Paddy’s Army”, that is – a group of about 25 St Patrick’s School pupils in Bryndwr who have collected almost 150 pairs of pyjamas to give to foster children. The pyjamas will be included in backpacks made up by volunteer group Foster Hope Christchurch, which also include things like toiletries, books and soft toys. Co-ordinator Ngarie Worsley said the packs were personalised for each foster child, to try to make them feel loved and valued at a rough point in their lives, when they had to leave their own homes to move in with a foster family. “We used to see children come with garbage bags full of stuff, and if your stuff is in a garbage bag you don’t exactly feel so great,” she said. The St Patrick’s pupils were inspired to help by the stories of one of their classmates, who was a foster child, Paddy’s Army member Izzy Gibson said. “We thought that we’re so

PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN lucky to have all the things that we have, when some people are being taken out of their homes in the middle of the night to go to a family that they don’t even know,” she said. They created posters, spoke in assembly to inspire their fellow pupils to help, and did “a lot of nagging” to collect the pyjamas, fellow army member Kate Wield said. In the past, the pupils have organised a blanket collection for St Vincent de Paul, and they plan to do more to help local charities in the future.

Mrs Worsley said the pupils’ effort would make a huge difference to Foster Hope, which works to put together about 5000 packs each year. “It just blows my mind and I think it’s incredible, because 150 pairs of pyjamas means that we can more than do what we need to do this year,” she said. She said the charity still needed donations of things like toiletries, small toys or craft activities. •More information can be found at www.fosterhope. org.nz/christchurch.

MORE THAN $26,000 was raised for a St Margaret’s College pupil in need of a kidney transplant. A total of $26,218.10 has been donated to 12-year-old Maddie Collins (right) following a ball held recently for her. Maddie Collins is in need of a kidney transplant and her best hopes of finding a suitable match require her to travel to the United States. The trip is expected to cost $350,000. The ball was held on September 3 and the money was raised from ticket sales, donations and an auction. Fundraising efforts continue with a national mufti day planned for tomorrow. Spectacular night under the stars raises $10,000 By Georgia O’Connor-Harding AN EXCITING night out with the stars was held at Fendalton Open Air School with about 1200 people showing up to the event. The Spectacular Space and Science Night was held last Friday to raise money so the school can further advance its outdoor spaces. Robots, the Martin Jetpack, a planetarium and hand-made rockets were just some of the fun activities featured at the event. Fendalton School parent teachers association member Sarah Bourke said about $10,000 was raised from the evening. “It was brilliant. There was the most amazing community buzz around the place,” she said. Mrs Bourke said the event brought a diverse range of people together with the Chinese community making dumplings and Japanese making sushi. While it has not been decided what type of spaces the money will go towards, the school is looking at options including gardens, outdoor furniture, landscaping and painting murals.

OPENING: Pupils from Harewood School were excited to be involved in the opening of the Russley Rd underpass last week. Aidan Brannan (below left), of McConnell Dowell and Downer, and school leaders Jacob Frost and Brianna Gauci, both aged 10, buried a time capsule with New Zealand Transport Agency southern region director Jim Harland. The time capsule included stories the pupils had written. The new underpass allows cyclists and walkers to safely get across the road. The New Zealand Transport Agency is undertaking $112 million worth of upgrades to the road which is expected to be completed in 2018.

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A MUSICAL director from Merivale has played a key role in preparing one of New Zealand’s longest running choirs for a production of Evita. Music director Angus Simmons, 20, has not only taught the Christchurch Boys’ Choir the music, but also plays an aristocrat in the production. The choir, which has been singing for about 30 years, has been performing in Evita at the Isaac Theatre Royal since last Thursday. Made up of boys aged nine to 13, the choir represents a traditional 1950s Argentine church choir in a staged requiem mass. Simmons said the company was going to audition the group, but realised it was historically correct to have a choir made up of unbroken, treble male voices. “The boys’ singing is very angelic so the audience will appreciate it a lot,” he said. Simmons said, for some of the boys, it is their first time ever performing on stage in full costume.

ON STAGE: The Christchurch Boys’ Choir rehearse for Evita, which is currently playing at the Isaac Theatre Royal.

“They have risen to the occasion and know exactly where they stand and I think they will add to that cute factor people look for in shows,” he said. From the choir of 24 boys, 12 will perform on alternative nights throughout the season. The choir’s aim is to give young singers an opportunity to be exposed to the music community. In the past, they have performed with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and the Christchurch City Choir.

Simmons has run the choir since the beginning of last year along with his partner Kimberley Wood. The rock opera follows the life of Eva Peron, the second wife of Argentine president Juan Peron. Eva served as the first lady of Argentina from 1946 until her untimely death at the age of 33 in 1952. “The show portrays her in a light that isn’t positive. Some people loved her and some people despised her so you have to make up your mind,”

Simmons said. Simmons wants to become a professional opera singer. He is studying a bachelor of music, majoring in performance voice, at Canterbury University, “I am hoping to live a life of music. Performing would be ideal but I am not shutting down any other opportunities whether it is directing in choirs or whatever,” he said. •Evita will run until October 1. Catwalk to fight breast cancer By Annabelle Dick SEVEN NEW Zealand women, on average, will hear the news today that they have breast cancer. Breast Cancer Cure is trying to help reduce that statistic by holding a fashion show in Christchurch, and around the country, with New Zealand’s biggest designers. The nationwide Fashion for a Cure charity show on Thursday will display collections from Kiwi designers to raise funds for breast cancer research. Breast Cancer Cure general manager Phillipa Green said the event is important as it provides financial support for ongoing study. “This show is absolutely vital for us. It’s our biggest earner and it’s important because we don’t do a bucket collection day or fundraising week so this is one of the ways that we raise a lot of money from the public. They’re actually donating it and getting a lot back in return,” she said. A pool of high-end designers from around the country will light up the Christchurch Art Gallery on September 22. COOP, Knuefermann, Moochi, Andrea Moore, Storm,

Trelise Cooper, Working Style and Zambesi will all show their Spring/Summer collections on the catwalk. It’s the first time Elisabeth Findlay’s Zambesi will appear at the Christchurch show and she’ll be bringing a range men’s and women’s clothes to the table. Designers will also donate items from the show to put up for auction to add to the money

pot. New Zealand Familial Breast Cancer Study co-ordinator Dr Logan Walker will also speak to the audience about the organisations ongoing research. “One of the main pillars for our fundraising throughout the year is to connect with more New Zealanders around the country and not just be an Auckland-based charity. This is

a way to reach out to people,” Ms Green said. More than $250,000 was raised from all five shows in 2015 and the charity want to crack the $300,000 mark this year. “Just from Christchurch, we would like to get over the $50,000 mark,” she said. Fashion Looking Airline uniforms land in city good at the races

IT’S FUN to strut your stuff and have a good time at the races, but as Vania Bailey says, don’t forget etiquette. “You don’t want to be a show pony. You need to look polished but most importantly you need to feel comfortable in your own skin. “Don’t reveal too much. Remember the rules – if you are showing off a bit of cleavage then wear a longer skirt. If you have a long split in your dress don’t show off your chest. Don’t have everything on show – be discreet. “Accessories are important to pull your outfit together – shoes, short gloves and a matching fascinator or hat. “If you are going to wear something fitted make sure you wear the right garments underneath so there are no outlines or bumps. “If you decide on a spray tan, have a trial a few weeks before. You don’t want to turn orange on the day. Book your hair, nails and makeup in advance.”

OLD SCHOOL: The ‘Air New Zealand 75 Years. Our nation. The world. Connected’ exhibition is on at Canterbury Museum.

AN AWARD-WINNING exhibition that looks at the uniforms, aircraft and stories of the country’s flagship airline opened in Christchurch last weekend. Air New Zealand 75 Years. Our nation. The world. Connected is an exhibition at Canterbury Museum celebrating the airline’s 75th anniversary. It has already been on display at Te Papa in Wellington, and Auckland War Memorial Museum, attracting 677,000 visitors. The exhibition begins with a look at Air New Zealand’s uniform designs over the years, as well as traveller and crew stories.

It moves into the aircraft and flight aspect of the airline’s history, including the TEAL flying boat era, and the early days of flight in Canterbury. Ensuring a safe work place Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries,

hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. new Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. if you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.

Breaking the language barrier for tennis players IN A first for tennis in Canterbury, Waimairi Tennis Club will offer two novel coaching programmes this summer – one conducted in Mandarin, and the other for pre-schoolers. Club senior coach Adam Gard’ner, who has some Chinese Mandarin skills, saw an opportunity for Christchurch’s expanding Mandarin-speaking community to get involved in tennis. “Many new people to the city are looking for ways to meet up with others, to have fun and to exercise, and this programme will provide exactly those opportunities. It’s a ‘learn to play programme’ and it is based on Tennis New Zealand’s ‘Tennis Xpress’ programme for learners and intermediate level players. The big difference though, is that it will be delivered predominantly in the Mandarin language,” said Gard’ner Shanghai, China was home to Gard’ner and his family for 12 years while he was involved in tennis management at the Shanghai Racquet Club, and coach development with the Professional Tennis Registry. “There’s a real passion for tennis in China and players like Li Na are like superstars. We’re sure that local Mandarin speakers will be just as enthusiastic about our programme,” says Gard’ner. Waimairi Tennis Club

Freedom to learn and explore As a parent herself, Tiny Tots Nursery and Preschool owner and operator, Rebecca Ellis knows only too well how important your child’s welfare and learning is. For the highest quality care and education for your children Tiny Tots Nursery and Preschool is a privately owned and family operated centre that ensures peace of mind through their commitment to your child’s needs. “Over the years I’ve found that the best results for happy, socially well-adjusted children who are free to explore and grow, come from an environment that has flexible routines, changing challenges and a caring professional, qualified and experienced teaching team,” says Rebecca. Tiny Tots provides a safe and secure environment in which children can learn, create and grow to the best of their abilities. Observing the children at play the teachers communicate with both parents and the teaching team in order to develop an individual

programme tailored to each child’s unique needs. This helps the children to extend on their learning and enhances their development while in an open learning environment. Tiny Tots is a small, homely centre with a real family feel and has a great open plan environment both indoors and out. Children are provided with high quality equipment, resources and facilities to support each child’s learning and development. Teachers encourage parents to spend time with their children in the centre, especially to help them settle in, which also helps parents to discover how the centre operates throughout the day. Parents and children are welcome to visit Tiny Tots at 148 England Street in Linwood or phone 3896851.

Lindisfarne - Developing Children’s feelings of self-worth Lindisfarne Nursery School was established by Tricia Cuthbert in 1987 and remains part of the Cuthbert family today. We are committed to Christchurch, to our community, our Lindisfarne families, and most importantly the futures and happiness of our children.

PROGRAMME: Waimairi Tennis Club senior coach Adam Gard’ner will bring a new flavour to tennis coaching this season, coaching in Mandarin president, Lloyd Russell says the idea to introduce the Mandarin speaking coaching is a fantastic opportunity for the club. “Having Adam with his Mandarin language skills seemed a great chance to further our efforts to attract a new sector of players. We’re sure this programme will be a hit with the Christchurch community,” said Russell. Waimairi Tennis Club will also offer a new Tennis Hotshots ‘Blue Stage’

programme this summer. Russell says it will provide three to five-year-olds with an eight-session introductory programme that focuses on fundamental perceptual motor skills, building movement, ball and racquet skills. With a total of 500 members – juniors and seniors – the club is the largest in Canterbury. Each season it enters upward of 11 senior and 35 junior teams in Canterbury Tennis competitions.

We believe in developing children’s feelings of self-worth, and encouraging tolerance and understanding of others. Our teachers all hold a Diploma of Teaching in Early Childhood, and one holds a Diploma of Teaching in Primary as well as early childhood. She prepares

the four year olds for school through an informal and brief daily ‘lesson’ time which the children love to take part in. We have a separate nursery with an outdoor area where the children discover and explore. We are a strong multi-cultural centre with committed teachers who embrace and celebrate diversity for our families. Morning and afternoon tea and a cooked lunch are provided, and we welcome visitors. HEALTH & BEAUTY

Effective treatment for many types of pain Complementary medicine is becoming increasingly sought after in New Zealand as people become aware of the many different methods of treating pain and ill health that are available here. Christchurch-based Chinese health practitioner Lan Xiao has developed a method of treatment, which she says has as an immediate affect on a wide variety of pains and health conditions. It is known as ‘acupuncture without needles’. Lan describes it as being similar to reflexology in that the problem area on the body is determined through pressure, but is much more accurate. Trained as a medical practitioner in China, Lan came to New Zealand in 1992 and began practising acupuncture in 1995. From that discipline she created her acupuncture without needles, and uses it to treat people of all ages with many different types of pain in all parts of the body. This can include arthritic pain, MS, and pain from injury. “For example, the treatment has been very successful for people who have painful joints caused by arthritis,” Lan says. Acupuncture without needles is also effective in restoring energy levels, she says.

“As people age their energy is reduced, and this can lead to other health problems. The acupuncture without needles treatment is like the body’s battery being charged up again, so their energy levels are restored, which in turn helps overcome their health problems.” Lan also uses it to treat depression and anxiety, and says it can help with addiction problems as well. “After the treatment the person has no cravings – because it treats the cause of the addiction.” She says the results are immediate, though people may need several treatments, depending on the extent of their health problem, and while it is slightly painful for few moments, everyone can tolerate it. Lan Xiao’s website, www. drlansreflexologynetwork.co.nz, includes videos of people whose health problems have been overcome after receiving the treatment. Her clinic is located at 108 Sawyers Arms Road, and her hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12pm to 5pm. To discuss your health issues or make an appointment, phone 323 4168 or 027 231 8388.

Loss Fruit An extract of a small pumpkinlike fruit called Garcinia Cambogia from India & Asia has shown itself to greatly assist weight management & overall health. In fact many have found it to increase fat loss by 2 to 3 times greater than normal. T.V. Dr. Oz has said it is the most effective & fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss. Even without exercise & diet changes many have found it beneficial, although even better & quicker results are often obtained with extra exercise & an improved diet. The extract of this amazing fruit is called Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made & stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels in the brain that help control mood & sleep (great for emotional eaters), improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of strokes & cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other health benefits. It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if

you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent & digestive aid. To obtain reliable results it is important to take a product that contains a standardized extract of 60% HCA & also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a wellresearched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more. Enjoy unique shopping to be found at Women’s Expo With over 200 sites to browse, unique businesses to discover, shopping, bargains and laughter, the Expo is the ultimate day out for every woman. One of the appeals the Expo has to visitors is the variety of companies involved with everything from jewellery and shoes to activewear and fitness to skincare and health products to gourmet food and wine and even a company offering plantbased cooking classes for Kids & Adults. There really is something for everyone and all ages. Renee Murray from NZME Events, organiser of the Expo says “Our aim is to have as wide of a range of companies involved with the Expo as possible. Women are all different and their individual interests are so diverse. One woman may love the latest in makeup or skincare but the woman beside her may be more interested in cycling the Otago Central Rail Trail or sampling handmade cheese. It’s great on the weekend to see all the various women visit the show, from teenagers to business women, mothers to grandmothers and friends simply enjoying each other’s company. It’s becoming more common for us to see three

generations visit the Expo together as well, with the daughter, mother and grandmother all enjoying the show and spending the day with each other.” Brandhouse will exhibit at the Expo for the first time with their range of champagne, vodka, port and wines. Popular at other Expo’s this year has been the Royal Dragon’s elite flavour vodka collection with some flavours selling out. Introducing the most tantalizing and unique flavoured vodka collection of its time flavours include Watermelon, Green Apple, Passion Fruit, Chocolate and Lychee… A great vodka collection to enjoy neat, on the rocks or in your favourite cocktail! Visit the large Brandhouse site at the show to sample from their fabulous range and take home what you love. Christinz Clothing will visit the show for the first time, travelling from Balclutha to showcase her selection of Designer Clothing including; pants, stunning tops, skirts, base layers and jackets. A popular
